Is Raw Manuka Honey Better?

Raw honey is unfiltered, unprocessed, and unheated - it comes straight from the beehive and is bursting with natural goodness. Manuka honey is a special type of honey made only in parts of New Zealand and Australia. It is rich in compounds, antioxidants, and nutrients.

The best way to consume Manuka honey is to take it raw. Raw manuka honey is obtained using gentle methods that help maintain its natural nutrient profile and antibacterial properties. So if you’re consuming honey for health reasons, it's better to go for raw manuka honey instead of regular (processed) varieties.

Is a Spoonful of Manuka Honey Good for You?

Like all types of honey, manuka honey is rich in fructose, which is a simple sugar. Fructose is easily digestible and a quick source of energy. So, if you’re feeling low energy or a bit lazy, a spoonful of raw manuka honey can energize you instantly.

Manuka honey is also packed with some special compounds. It contains natural antioxidants and phenols, both of which work to keep us in good health.

Raw manuka honey has also been researched for its positive effects on heart health and our metabolism. There is some evidence that its antimicrobial properties bolster our immune system and keep our skin healthy.

Is Manuka Honey Really Worth It?

Yes - luckily the healing potential of manuka honey did not go unnoticed. Studies found that manuka honey has many benefits for the skin. Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties work against a host of skin problems including flakiness, infections, acne, and eczema.

Manuka honey has also been studied for its role in dental hygiene. Researchers found that the honey was effective in countering plaque and reducing the risk of gum disease.

What Does Manuka Honey Taste Like?

Pure Manuka Honey (MGO 263+) is thick and rich honey with woody undertones, mild to medium sweetness, and a clean aftertaste. Pleasantly sweet and earthy with hints of caramel, this rare honey is for true honey aficionados.

Sourced from the scenic hills of New Zealand where bees enjoy the nectar of scented manuka blooms during summertime. Our manuka honey is obtained using cold methods to preserve its natural essence.

Pure Manuka Honey by Nature’s Blends has an MGO count of 263+. MGO stands for methylglyoxal, a natural compound that makes manuka honey special. The MGO count tells you how much MGO is present in manuka honey.

At Nature’s Blends, we independently test every batch of honey for MGO content and quality assurance purposes. This step helps us keep up our promise of bringing you the finest nature has to offer.

The result? A wholesome and pure jar of honey that comes straight from the beehive.

About MGO & UMF

Both MGO and UMF are grading systems. Both measure the amount of beneficial bioactive compounds present in manuka honey and both are useful in determining the quality and usage of manuka honey you’re about to buy.

There are some main differences between the two:

MGO measures only the methylglyoxal levels in manuka honey. Methylglyoxal (MG) is a special bioactive that gives manuka honey its remarkable antimicrobial properties. Generally, the higher the MGO rating of manuka honey, the richer it is in MG and the better it's quality.

UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor. It is a separate grading system that counts MG plus some other bioactive that are only present in manuka honey. That’s why the UMF rating is considered an indicator of quality as well as purity.

Is MGO or UMF Better?

MGO and UMF measure different things so they cannot be directly compared. Both the MGO and the UMF ratings are useful indicators in their way. They can help you pick the right variety of manuka honey and determine how best to use it.

What Level of Manuka Honey is Best?

Manuka honey is pure goodness in all its forms - but knowing what you’re going to use your honey for can help you pick what MGO rating to go for.

As a general rule, potent varieties of manuka honey are used for skin therapy and cosmetic purposes while milder manuka honey (table varieties) with lower MGO ratings are perfect for everyday use.

  • Table grade (UMF 5-UMF 10) - ideal for daily consumption, include in your health chart, beverages, salads or take it raw
  • Moderate grade (UMF 10 - UMF15) - is called the ‘therapeutic grade’ and is suitable for short-term consumption
  • Higher grade manuka honey (UMF 15- 25)- with higher MGO and UMF readings can be used for skin care (wound healing, skin therapy, etc)

MGO and UMF - Parity Chart

MGO and UMF measure two different things - but there’s still a relationship between their values. This rough parity chart based on estimated values can help you convert the two:

  • UMF 5 = MGO83
  • UMF10 = MGO263
  • UMF15 = MGO514
  • UMF20 = MGO829
  • UMF25 = MGO1200

*This jar of Pure Manuka Honey by Nature’s Blends has an MGO count of 263+ and is ideal for everyday consumption.

Manuka honey comes from the Manuka tree, a short evergreen shrub that is truly special. The Manuka bush is native to New Zealand and some parts of Australia. It grows nowhere else in the world.

In spring and summer, the Manuka bush comes into bloom very briefly. During this time, it sports sweet-scented flowers that attract local bees. The bees feed on the nectar of these rare flowers to produce manuka, honey.

The Manuka tree, better known as the Tea Tree, has been growing naturally in New Zealand for thousands of years. The native people were the first ones to discover the healing properties of this tree.

The Maori people used to hold the manuka tree in high regard and consider it a source of strength. The bark of the tree was used to cure many ailments. Other extracts from the bush were also used in traditional medicine.
