Is Raw Manuka Honey Better?

Raw honey is healthier because it is full of pollen content, natural compounds, and friendly enzymes. Processed honey that has been filtered or refined loses some of its natural potency.

Manuka honey is a monoflower honey with special properties. It has a unique nutrient profile that is responsible for its potent anti-germ properties.

The best way to consume manuka honey is to go for high-quality raw honey that is cold harvested and unfiltered. Since it is unprocessed, it’s packed with natural goodness that makes the manuka experience special.

Is a Spoonful of Manuka Honey Good for You?

Yes - manuka honey has been studied widely for its role in maintaining good health. It contains phenols and natural antioxidants that help the body heal and repair, down to the cellular level.

Manuka honey can also re-energize you if you’re feeling a bit low. The thick creamy honey contains simple sugars along with trace nutrients that are easily absorbed by the body.

Manuka honey may also be good for heart health and overall metabolism. Traditionally, it was used to alleviate digestive discomfort and for skincare.

Is Manuka Honey Really Worth It?

Raw manuka honey with a high MGO rating is really worth it, especially if you want to use it for skincare. Manuka honey can speed up skin repair, reduce scarring and protect the skin from germs. It has been studied for its role in treating skin problems like dryness, flakiness, eczema, and acne.

Because of its anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, manuka honey is also good for your gums and teeth. It can reduce buildup and minimize the risk of gum disease.

What Does Manuka Honey Taste Like?

Our manuka honey is rich, full, and creamy. It has a layered taste that brings together medium-level sweetness with faint floral notes and just a hint of caramel. The aftertaste is clean, pleasant, and mildly bitter.

Raw Manuka Honey MGO 514+ by Nature’s Blends is sourced from the lush manuka grooves of New Zealand.

Our manuka honey has an MGO rating of 514+

MGO stands for methylglyoxal (MG), the main compound that makes manuka honey special. The MGO rating tells you how much MG is there in your honey.

At Nature’s Blends, we test every batch of honey to make sure you’re getting what we promised you; the finest honey nature has to offer.

About MGO & UMF

MGO and UMF are two different indicators used to gauge the quality and purity of manuka honey. Both the MGO and UMF ratings can help you decide which variety of honey will suit you best - but in different ways.

MGO or the methylglyoxal (MG) levels of honey are important.  MG is responsible for the special antimicrobial properties of manuka honey. The higher the MGO rating of manuka honey, the more the levels of methylglyoxal and the better it's quality.

UMF is a different grading system. It stands for the Unique Manuka Factor. The UMF rating measures the levels of some bio-actives exclusive to manuka honey in addition to its MG levels. It is considered an indication of the honey’s purity as well as quality.

Is MGO or UMF Better?

Both are useful indicators in their own right. They both measure different things so they cannot be compared directly. But both MGO and UMF grading systems can help you decide which variety and potency of raw manuka honey will suit your purpose best.

What Level of Manuka Honey is Best?

Raw high-grade varieties of manuka honey (with higher MGO or UMF values) are better for therapeutic use, topical application, and cosmetic purposes since they are more potent.

Milder table grade varieties are suitable for everyday consumption. If you are taking manuka honey for health reasons, using medium-grade honey might work best for you:

  • Table grade (UMF 5-UMF 10) - ideal for daily consumption, include in your health chart, beverages, salads or take it raw
  • Moderate grade (UMF 10 - UMF15) - is called the ‘therapeutic grade’ and is suitable for short-term consumption
  • Higher grade manuka honey (UMF 15- 25)- with higher MGO and UMF readings can be used for skincare (wound healing, skin therapy, etc

MGO and UMF - Parity Chart

MGO and UMF measure different things but there’s still a relationship between their values. This rough parity chart can help you decide which potency of raw manuka would suit you best:

  • UMF 5 = MGO83
  • UMF10 = MGO263
  • UMF15 = MGO514
  • UMF20 = MGO829
  • UMF25 = MGO1200

*This jar of Pure Manuka Honey by Nature’s Blends has an MGO count of 514+ and is suitable for skin therapy and health uses.

The Manuka bush is an evergreen shrub that is native to New Zealand and parts of Australia. It has been growing naturally in the area for hundreds of years.

Known as the New Zealand Tea Tree, the manuka bush is a local favorite. It represents strength and sustenance. Its extracts were traditionally used by the Maori people to remedy skin problems, aches, and discomfort.
