Manuka Honey Multifloral vs Monofloral – Differences and Benefits

Manuka

Manuka honey is undoubtedly one of the most delicious, health-giving, and expensive types of honey. This superfood has a marvellous composition of nutrients, particularly the minerals, which are nearly 4 times more in quantity than other honey varieties. But does every jar of Manuka honey will provide you with the exact taste, quality, and nutrition?! Absolutely not!

You can measure its quality with two specific markers, UMF and MGO. But before grading, you must know what type of honey you are buying.

Multifloral vs Monofloral Manuka Honey

Every honey-lover will surely be troubled about choosing monofloral or multifloral Manuka honey, especially if they are unaware of their difference. So, what is the difference between multifloral and monofloral Manuka honey?

  1. Source of Nectar

Yes, they differ in various variables such as colour, consistency, taste, health benefits/uses, and texture, but their characteristic difference is in their source.

What Is Multifloral Manuka Honey?

Putting the literal meanings: “multi” means “multiple”, “floral” means “flowers”, and “Manuka” means the tree from which bees collect nectar.

Multifloral Manuka honey is honey comprising a blend of nectars collected by the bees from vast wildflower varieties belonging to multiple plant species. This type of honey is produced only when bees roam freely (they can travel up to 2kms) and suck the floral juice from other sources that they can possibly find near the hive instead of only feeding on the Manuka bush. Although Mānuka pollen stays dominant, honey also carries a natural blend of other nectars.

A unique characteristic of Manuka multifloral honey is that you get a new composition every year as the mixture of nectars is never the same due to the ever-changing bees' location and flower varieties found in the forest. Pretty fascinating, right!?

What Is Monofloral Manuka Honey?

What does monofloral Manuka honey mean? As “mono” means “one”, Manuka monofloral honey is honey obtained from the bees that have collected nectar from a single flower or bush source called Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) predominantly found in the densest and remote forests of New Zealand.

This distinctive single plant nectar comes with unique properties and without contamination from other nectars – the purest form of honey. Its raw and organic form offers as many health benefits as the Manuka tree can give.

  1. Range of MGO

For multifloral Manuka honey: 30-70.

For monofloral Manuka honey: as high as 840.

Are you thinking, what does MGO mean in honey? MGO is an abbreviated form of methylglyoxal. It is not only a naturally occurring compound found in Manuka honey but also a quality marker. The higher the MGO value, the more extraordinary the honey will be with maximum antioxidant, antiviral, and antibacterial properties.

  1. Five attributes

To classify them into two, the honey is evaluated for 5 points, set by the NZ’s Ministry of Primary Industries:

  • Four naturally occurring chemicals found in nectar (Phenyllactic acid, Methoxyacetophenone, Methoxybenzoic acid, and Hydroxyphenyllactic acid)
  • 1 DNA or pollen test to testify the presence of Manuka pollen

Tests are carried out in MPI-recognised laboratories only. Monofloral Manuka honey should show higher values for a minimum of two chemicals. If honey lacks to meet the set values for even one out of four markers, it is termed multifloral.

  1. Manuka Honey Benefits/Uses

One of the most frequently asked questions is, “which is better monofloral or multifloral Manuka honey?!” Due to the difference in composition, both are found nurturing and wholesome. Whereas considering their MGO content, quality, purity, potency, and nutrients, they are used differently.

Is monofloral Manuka honey better? Technically, yes, because of its higher antibacterial and anti-inflammatory components.

What is monofloral Manuka honey good for? For everything! If your only purpose is to get the health benefits of Manuka honey, monofloral will be a suitable choice. You can choose the one you like or which serves your purpose. If you prefer the taste and need to meet your sweet cravings but cannot compromise on health, choose multifloral honey.

Manuka honey multifloral or monofloral, both are delicious and beneficial for maintaining healthy life!
